Re: First briar handcarved pipe
My recommendation is to immerse yourself in this forum and read as much as you can. There is a plethora of information and tutorials all over this forum that well set you on the right track. Start with reading the stickies that are in each section of the forum. They are great starting points. I recommend picking a traditional shape and trying to emulate that as much as possible for your next few pipes.
Re: First briar handcarved pipe
Yep. You're best bet is to do some research here in the archives to get the basics down. There are some great tutorial stickies in each section. Get the basic concepts down then we can help you from there. Good luck.

Welcome! Read a lot. There is a ton of good information on here and on the net. Pimos book is very good as well if you prefer paper. Oh and that knurled piece of briar that other pipe had is called plateau. It doesn't look like that in the raw it is under the bark. The premium portion of the wood.

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
Ok you all are using a ton of terms I'm not getting haha. I'm self taught. Never owned a pipe. Decided to carve one. Pulled out the drill an got the holes lined up right so I started carving. Then I researched what wood to use ordered a piece of briar drilled an carved. That's what I got. Now I'm researching an realizing there is a lot more to it than I thought. Cant wait to get my supplies in mail an start on another one.

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
Lance,
There is a pipe book about making pipes it is called pimos. If you google pimos pipe you will find it pretty easy. It is full of information on how to including terms and such.
You commented the other day on a pipe that was rough on top asking how it was done. So, you will find two cuts of briar. Plateau and eschebon ( hopefully spelled those right) the ones that leave a knobby rough top are plateau. Basically that is the outside of the wood, typically nicer grain and a little pricier. The eschebon is kind of the regular briar typically will end with a smooth top of bowl. Take your time a read around. Hope this helps with any terms I might have used earlier.

I will say that the Pimo book is honestly a waste of your time since you're already on this forum. I have two copies and have read it cover to cover. It's very useful for learning the basics, but you'll get all of the information from that book and more than you can even imagine from this forum.
My advice, skip the book and search search search the forum. Read every thread.
Also, just FYI, I think that "plateau" is acceptable but the two cuts are more commonly spelled "plateaux" and "ebauchon."

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
I have been reading as much info as I can find. I'm waiting for more briar to arrive in mail tomarrow. Now that I know a little bit now, I'm curious to see how the next pipe comes out. Although I must say it does smoke better than I thought it would.

All of you guys have been a bunch of sissy's and I know what you really wanted to say.
What they meant to say was: "Gosh, that looks like Sas's onychomycosis (toe fungus)".

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
Yeah huber I'm not known for spelling. I have not purchased pimos book. Because, I prefer to hunt for information on line that is how I ended up here. I suggest it incase a fella like the feel of paper or learns better that way?
I am also waiting for briar, and buffing wheels.

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
It looks phallic to me so I was being sarcastic. All joking aside, without a proper stem, it looks like a very primitive pipe or one that is used to smoke marijuana in. Do some research here in the forum archives to learn to make a more proper tobacco pipe and you'll get better feedback.

Re: First briar handcarved pipe
Ok I now with being said I can see that. Also like I said. When I started making this pipe itwas without any research done and absolutely no knowledge on tobacco pipes. I am very excited to get my supplies in mail ( hopefully today ) an start on my next one.
