Re: Ernie's Shrine of Pipe Excellence
Yak, my apologies for using the wrong elicit/illicit. I realized my mistake after posting but did not correct it because I forgot that spelling and grammar mistakes were symptomatic of criminal behavior and the decline of western civilization, or some such horribleness. Here I was, thinking an error in a brief post on a pipe making forum might get a pass from snarky criticism because it's about pipe making, not grammar and spelling. That's why I love this forum...there's always something to learn.

Not just the pipe, in fact. Don't you remember modeling it for the camera?

Sorry, Yak! I read it the wrong way. I'm glad you found humor in my unintentional cleverness.

Dear god I hope that's not part of the regular Q.C. process his pipes go through before being put up for sale.LatakiaLover wrote:Um, yes, I did.ToddJohnson wrote:No you didn't.LatakiaLover wrote:

Nope, that piece went to Greg Gelvin--who's not Chinese--and he paid $1400 for it, not $4500, and that was in Kansas City, not Chicago--where a similar pipe did sell to one of my Chinese collectors, but not for the price you quoted. So ultimately, no, you didn't.LatakiaLover wrote:

Ah. A the old pronoun switcheroo. Since there was a physical object being discussed---a pipe--I assumed it was the "it." You, apparently, read "it" as referring to witnessing a monetary transaction.ToddJohnson wrote:Nope, that piece went to Greg Gelvin--who's not Chinese--and he paid $1400 for it, not $4500, and that was in Kansas City, not Chicago--where a similar pipe did sell to one of my Chinese collectors, but not for the price you quoted. It never occurred to me that someone might interpret what I wrote to mean, "I saw Todd type a credit card number into a pad." (or however you do it)
As for KC vs. Chicago, I never mentioned where I saw the pipe.
Given all that, it looks like ultimately ultimately, yes, I did.

(Don't worry folks, just havin' a bit of fun, here. Remember the missing tone of voice and body language thing? Well, read this exchange in beer-after-work, smack talk voices. Todd and I get along fine.)

Keepin' it real often has that effect, I've discovered. The Smoking Yeti wrote:Idk George, I'm starting to think you just piss people off!
The thing is, when you do it isn't you they're pissed about. Usually they're just mad about some fact or other that's inconvenient to them, and they take out their anger on those who don't join them in denying or ignoring the fact.
That's just referring to the Big Picture, though. In this particular case, as I said, Todd and I have talked at some length face-to-face several times, and we get along fine. (Hell... do you think he'd let some stranger take that pic?) We're just engaging in a bit of "linguistic precision smack-talk."

I wish Todd hung out in this neighborhood more often
Apparently successful pipemakers actually have to work- unlike us, who just hang out on online forums most of the time!

I didn't realize we'd ever met in person, but I'm glad to know that we're friends, what with us both "keepin' it real" and all.LatakiaLover wrote:Keepin' it real often has that effect, I've discovered. The Smoking Yeti wrote:Idk George, I'm starting to think you just piss people off!
