I've discovered there is no reason to emulate Dunhill shapes. You can make any pipe smoke like a Dunhill. Case in point, I have an old Willmer Extra Grain A that smoked like, well.... The stem broke, so I felt around in my junk drawer until I found a stem that more or less fit. Turned out, it had a white dot on it. Lo and behold, I stuck it in the hole, packed, lit up and.....smoked like a dunhill. Dot's the secret!

You don't even know my name, dummy.

If I had any desire to make an ugly pipe, I'd prove you totally wrong. :P

Edit: Had a thought. Get out your fancy schmancy photos hop and connect the dots. Now, realize you don't need to make the chamber perpendicular to the walls. The bowl can slant back to the shank a hair, especially with a bit of a conical chamber. I ain't saying Dunhill did it this way, but it am saying it could be done.

Actually I did save the pic and try that, and you can physically connect a very thin straight line through the shank, but the pipe would be very, very thin at the topside of the shank and on the bottom of the bowl. I'm not sure that in "real life" you could do it.

See that's the thing. 5/32" is very thin relative to a freaking 8" long pipe that is about an inch think where the shank and bowl meet.

As for close to the shank top and bottom, that ain't no thang.

Sigh, you're gonna make me do it, aren't ya?

To scale, my airway is less than 1/8 by a long shot. It's a tough go. COULD be done, as Tyler mentions, with a little cant on the chamber itself, but still, not within acceptable tolerances for me - that airway would be weak and might bleed tar through.

In other news,

ahaha... it could be done tyler, but I agree with Sas. dunhill probably wasnt freehand drilling and shaping and if he was its probably to thin for comfort on the shank. im pretty sure the stummels were frazed. and I don't think you can fraze and drill at different angles.

I had no idea they were 8" long though! that's a big pipe! (insert that's what she said jokes here)

I've got a brilliant idea! Sas and Tyler can both make an LC and then send them to me to critique and test.

Jesse, if your going to try and make the super elusive LC without curved drilling, I suggest trying to aim for this.

I actually cut an LC as a commission last year. This was absolutely the limit of a straight-drilled pipe in terms of how cranked, how "swanny" I could cut the shank.

Nice one, Sas! I hope Tyler plays too!

Evan, that Michael Parks has one of the greatest ring blasts I've seen. I've looked at ti quite a bit. For those of you that haven't stumbled across this LC info and are interested here is a page that compares to LCs with other carver reproductions:

Don't bend it more unless you want it that way. I find it refreshing when someone makes a replica and improves the shape a little.

wisemanpipes wrote:by the way, what was your budget on this pipe, Jesse! If were looking at the same pipe, it is now $2,300 and climbing. :o

Holy Hell!!! Well I bid $400, but I was expecting it to go for about $1,200. Waaaaay off!

That should make any LC clone of mine worth at least a third of $2300, right?
Yep, just first make 1/3 of all the pipes Dunhill made up until that point when it was made, then distribute them to the hundreds of shops around the world, then give them to the officers in the military, make a bunch of awesome tobacco products, wait 30 or so years, and Wallah!

:D
