Does anyone have any ideas?I'm looking for information about he following.
My Grandfather used pipes in 1947, in Holland, that would develope a
picture on the bowl after several month in use. The picture would become
a intrecal part of the bowl.
When bought new, the bowl would be off white.
The picture, (black and brown) hunting scene or landscape, would remain
on the pipe for several years but the contrast would slowly fade.
The bowl was most likely not clay but some other form of stone. The pipe
had a wooden stem.
I would appreciate very much any help you could offer.

Random pipe question email
Got this email the other day:

It might be worthwhile contacting these people:

It sounds like the pipe had some thin parts in the casting and these allowed parts of the pipe to colour much quicker than others thus developing the picture. The same method was used in ancient times to create hidden patterns in earthen ware drinking vessels, when in use a cup would have a picture or slogan that disapeared when it dried out.

I think that guy Rad Davis makes pipes like that, right? I believe most of the pictures that emerge are some form or other of hillbilly folklore.

You're all kidding, right? Some Meerschaums are made with pictures that develop as the pipe is smoked. I think probably different waxes are used in the finish. Blues as well as browns. (Yeah, I know I'm a few months behind, but I'm just getting back into it again.) These pipes used to be advertised in the "Popular ___ " mags (Science, Mechanics, etc.).
Re: Random pipe question email
The bowl was most definitely clay. This was a common type of clay pipe. The scene was painted on the with some type of reactive tint that would only show after use. I don't know the right term for these pipes to punch in a search engine. The name that comes to mind is Gouda but they made about 7 billion trillion clay pipes there over the year so that wont narrow it down much. A search for Goedewaagen should find them a similar style at least.
