two new ones

Post by the rev »

This is my first poker, and a freehand I call once bitten. One thing I learned from these pictures is if you don't do your bowl coating well... it looks bad and uneven. All critique is very much appreciated

well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin

Rev, I'm diggin' the progress you're making.

I think out of the two the second is my favorite. The profile view is very interesting. As far as the poker, I think there's a bit too much chunk left on the bottom, it looks a bit goofy.

As far as the stem work- it's good to see you cutting them yourself! I think your shank-stem transitions could do with a bit of work though, there appears to be a slight gap, and an awkward angle change(on the bottom pipe) minor things really, good work!!

Cheers,

Yeti

P.s. You're correct about the bowl coatings

Love the style there Rev, especially the second one.

What are those stems made out of?
Thus o’er my pipe, in contemplation
Of such things, I can constantly
Indulge in fruitful meditation
And so, puffing contentedly,
On land, on sea, at home, abroad,
I smoke my pipe and worship God.

I like them both, but especially the apple with bite taken out of it. Well named. You're doing good work. Keep them coming.

rev, those are pretty nice.

Now for some critique. The poker has too long a bottom and not a tall enough bowl. I believe the height of the bowl from the top of the stem should equal the length of the shank.

The apple shows a lot better flow and proportion, but the shank looks wider at the stem shank junction than the bowl/shank junction. If that was deliberate it doesn't look intentional enough. I suggest the shank taper slightly into the bowl with the smallest portion at the stem.

General comments: Staining looks great. I love the color choices. Stems...good for the first couple of hand cut ones. Better than my first. When I went to see Tyler in Midland past December he told me a tip about stems that has stuck with me: "thinner faster." Your stems could stand to loose a lot of weight. Start tapering as soon as you can.

Overall I think you're doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

This is probably my favorite poker shape here:
http://www.alpascia.com/detail.asp?detail=23915 I didn't nail it, but it's a nice shape to shoot for.
