Self centering or Indpendent Chuck For Stummels

Before I buy a chuck would like to hear some thoughts.

Voted self centering since pipemaking doesn't need ultra precision that people claim you can achieve with independent jaws.

Both have their own use. A self centered is easy because, well, it's self centering.
Downside is that your block has to be squared and you drill in and turn around the center of the block.

An independent one allows you to drill and turn offcenter if you want to. On the other hand, it's alot harder to use an independent one to realign things. Once you move both jaws, I'd think it'll be rather hard to get a block chucked in and aligned again.

I use a self centering OneWay chuck with #2 Tower jaws, which I'm really satisfied with.

I voted independent.. BUT I use both...

Independent for stummels and self centering for everything else..Spend the extra money for the other chuck.. you'll be glad you did.

My lathe came with one 3-jaw self cendering and one 4-jaw indpendent.

I bought a Sharp 4-jaw self centering chuck and a set of soft jaws which I tuned to use them for stummels.
So with one chuck always on the lathe, I just switch jaws of stummels or stems.

Definatelly self-centering.

I use both regularly. Different tools, different uses (sort've).

If I had to have one I would get an independent and a scroll

You'll need them both, but I would get a three jaw scroll first.

I prefer self centering for both. It's faster (for me) to use an oak shim with an SC chuck for stummels than to dial in an independent.

You could also get a two jaw scroll with notched jaws for handling round stock. I've been kicking that idea around.

A 3 jaw is always best for round stock as you always get all of the jaws contacting and it's very hard to get it crocked in the chuck. i like to have all my bases covered when it omes to handling stock so I have not only a a 3 jaw (actually I have about 5), a 4 jaw self centre and a 4 jaw independent, oh and a slotted face place as well

i recently pickup a super nova 2 chuck self centering with a set of profiled spigot jaws and pin jaws, really happy with them. its similar to the oneway chuck with tower jaws. the 4 pin jaws work great for holding moulded stems and round stock. i would reccomend a self centering chuck for ease of use and you can block up or shim a piece to turn off center then real limitation is how wide the jaws open. this set opens up to just over 2"

I have a scrolling chuck, a 4 jaw independent, a 4 jaw self centering and a 3 jaw self centering as well.

They all have their uses so eventually a use or uses will be found for all.

That being said, if I could only have one chuck for pipe making it would be the scrolling wood chuck. I can make jaws so that it can be used for lots of different things.
