Can you take a picture of the cutting knives you use so I can get an idea of what I need?

they're called cutting tools, look for lathe cutting tools on youtube, there's several very good video's on metal lathe cutting tools (I assume you bought a metal lathe?)
I found this one (and the ones following it) very helpful:

I got a cheap Chinese set to start me off. Of those, I basically use just 2, and not very often. Nowadays I just grind my own.

Take 2: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8-UXJF ... ItNW8/edit
This shows how to cut angles for different types of cutting tools, including images, as well as some general knowledge in their proper use.

Also, here are the only three shapes I use at this point.

thanks for the help David, but for some reason your links won't work. The first is an application to sign up for mail the second says I don't have permission to look at it

Whoops! I forgot to change the security setting. You should be able to view it now by using the second link.the rev wrote:thanks for the help David, but for some reason your links won't work. The first is an application to sign up for mail the second says I don't have permission to look at it

Re: I bought a lathe :) would like some help with tools now :)
There's a photo of my cutting tools on here somewhere, but I just wanted to say this. Even if you're using german tool steel--which I am--you will need to sharpen your cutting tools for about every two or three stems. Don't spend a bunch of money on pre-profiled cutting tools because they're good for about 10 passes, depending on what you're using them for. Instead, invest in a beefy grinder with a rough or medium 8" wheel, and a slow-speed grinder of good quality with a fine wheel. You can hog off material with the heavy grinder, quenching the tool frequently to keep from blueing it, and put a very fine edge on it with the slow speed grinder. You may also want a set of flat diamond hones for operations like facing stems, cutting flares, etc. Adam Remington and I share a set of maybe 25 cutting tools, and it is rare day on which one of us doesn't need to sharpen one.
TJ
P.S. If you're the guy who's been "using the same cutting tool for six years without ever having had to sharpen it," please post a photo of your results along with your response.

I sharpen mine nearly every other stem.. but I'm using my slack belt sander 320 grit to keep them sharp..
I used to spend about an hour sharpening tools (over a year ago) and changed due to the fact that I find it kind of silly, to spend so much time sharpening when it only lasted a few passes..
