Hey guys,
It's early and I'm feeling a little nostalgic, so I thought I'd wax here for a minute.
Almost one year ago, I finished my very first pipe. It was completely hand carved using only a rasp, file, dremel, and sandpaper. I jammed a drill bit into a prefab stem and spent hours turning down the tenon that way. I bought a small set of gimlets (hand powered drills) to drill the airway and pilot hole for the chamber. Using a dremel, I spent hours upon hours widening the pilot into a chamber. Ultimately, the pipe took me 84 hours over the course of two years to complete and the only reason I finished it was because I received so much encouragement from the internet community at large, but most of all from the people on this forum.
As the year progressed, I finished more pipes, bought a metal lathe, tooled up, and bought a bunch of materials. I built a rough outline of a website (which I'm still refining) and began the process of figuring out how to market and price my pipes. My personality has gone from awkward to humble to rude to cocky to respectful to impassioned to eager to reserved and every which way you could imagine on my journey to finding my confidence and myself within this wholly new chapter of my life... and you guys put up with it all (and still do)!
As I approach the end of my first year making pipes, I find that a whole new chapter is about to begin in this incredibly challenging yet oddly rewarding obsession we all share. Honestly, I couldn't imagine a better group of misfits to share the journey with.
Thanks a lot guys. It's been a great first year.

Congrats, David. You are indeed one chatty cat. I passed the one year mark not too long ago myself. It's quite an achievement.
Here looking forward to the next 20 years!

Well I have only been here for four months now. I had already made 5 pipes from kits, but they weren't much in the way of pipes. In the last four months I have learned quite a bit, made some progress, and have also grown to hate you. So I think I am really fitting in.
here is to many pipes in 13 my compadre

"but rev, isn't smoking a sin?"
well I suppose if one were to smoke to excess it would be a sin
"but what would be smoking to excess?"
Why smoking two pipes at once of course

Who are you calling a misfit!? Since most of this group can barely stand each other I'd say we've at least most on to miscreant.
