New workshop
New workshop
I finally started improving my workshop. Although it looks pretty nice (the room that is, not the "machinery") I come to realize it's not the most practical in the world. It's above our appartment, three stories up (which made getting my new lathe up there a pain in the ass). It has a really high celing and is uninsolated, which means it's getting pretty cold right now. At least it doesn't go under the freezing point.
So here's a few pics. Hope you enjoy.
And with lots of layers of clothes and hot coffee it's possible to work...

Re: New workshop
That's a really beautiful shop, and with so much potential!
Re: New workshop
Love it, room, room, and more room! Seems to me a few large space heaters would take the edge off!

Re: New workshop
Lots of room! I've seen some guys working out of not much more than a closet.
I'm curious as to the age of the building you are in. Those beams have some serious character.
Chas.

That is a beautiful workshop, I am very jealous. Ok you need to make improvments such as some insulation but you have so much potential. No matter what improvements i make my workshop will always be a brick and concrete garage, practical yes but beautiful it is not.
Re: New workshop
What an amazing space! And you lugged your lathe up 3 flights of stairs? And I thought I was crazy for lugging my lathe up 1 flight.
Shop looks great, bud. Can't wait to see it grow.

Very inspirational space there ! Love the old beams and joinery. I'm also curious how old the building is ? Guessing at least 120 years ?

If I wasn't married, I would pay you to let me live in there.
Re: New workshop
Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the space. Has lots of potential. It's only the beginning. And the best thing is that it's rent free!! The space belongs to our appartment.
A couple of heaters wouldn't do much in the long run. The space is around 65 square meters big and it's about 7 meters to the nock of the celing.

Guess again! The house was built in 1580.Alden wrote:Very inspirational space there ! Love the old beams and joinery. I'm also curious how old the building is ? Guessing at least 120 years ?
Re: New workshop
Yes, I could have guessed that just as easily ! The condition of the wood speaks of great age. I was going by the style of construction that most craftsman havent had the patience for in the last century and a half.DaGamba wrote:Guess again! Man what I would give for some of that lumber ! Just a bit from the sections that have been replaced. If you find a loose piece hiding in a corner somewhere, you should consider turning a bit for shank adornments. And if you find two pieces, remember your friend here in Texas. I'll gladly pay shipping

On another note, you can find old barns and homes built in this style all around central Texas. Thousands of Germans settled the area in the 1850's into the 1900's and they held onto the old way of life a long time. There are still plenty of families that have lived there 150 years and still speak Deutsch. To me its fascinating to see the same basic construction hundreds of years and a continent apart.

Well, there is actually quite some pieces of old lumber laying in a corner. I think it was used on the outside of the building because it has all these ornametal carvings and a bit of paint (a common way to adorn the facades). I did think about maybe trying to use that wood for instrument making but as I remember the pieces, they where pretty cracked and in a very bad state.Alden wrote: Yes, I could have guessed that just as easily ! A Beautiful space, so inspirational!
Concerning heat: it was -4°C in my workshop the past week. A decent sweater is enough, the only problem I have is the metal parts of the lathe feeling like working with your hands buried in snow...
I really need to start renovating and adding isolation.
