this time I concentrated on the finish to try and get a better shine than I had the last time, the last one I used a small 4" wheels on a hand drill, this time I went and purchased some 6" wheels and used them on my drill press.. big difference, Also this time I used a new preformed stem but I had to cut it to length, drill and tap the end to insert a tenon, and I had to cut the slot for the bit and then of course make it shine again after sanding it to fit the stummel, acrylic is no fun to drill seemed ok to buff tho. I don't know if you can see in these pictures or not but I am having trouble with my stems fitting flush with the mortise end, I am using a forestner bit I think my drill press might be out of square? I was looking at it to see if had any type of adjustment to square it up and I think I may have found one, also does anyone have any tips on how to hold a preformed stem the taper of the stem was allowing it to slip I ended up using a couple pieces of soft rubber that would form around the tapered stem it worked and didn't slip but I got vibration any ways thought I would share
i'm a tad of center with my drat hole I think that has something to with the drill press being out of square , yeah yeah I'll buy that....
again any tips, pointers , critiques are welcomed
Thanks for looking

Re: 2nd pipe an agg
Even if you are "out of square" with the press or with a vise under it... it only goes up and down. So even a "crooked" set up should lead a guy to a good fit with the stem - the stem might go at 20 degrees to the shank, but the fit will be flush. So I don't think that's your issue. Are you moving the pieces part way through the process? Like, you face with a forstner, drill the hole to take the pre-formed tenon, and then glue in the tenon all without moving anything?

Re: 2nd pipe an agg
no once I clamp the briar or stem I don't unclamp it, but I have turned the whole vice, I only have a small 10" bench drill press, so I have been lining up the bit and briar/stem one way and then turning the vise 90 degrees to drill, I wonder if that is the culprit

The way to make people want to smoke your pipes is to develop a reputation for excellence in your work. This takes a lot of hard work and several years to accomplish, and there are no short cuts. You just have to keep at it. - Rad Davis
