New pipe beech

Just a quick and dirty showing of a new pipe, done more in the style you guys are used to, for a change. Stummel is beech burl, with African blackwood bowl insert, bamboo stem, with canary wood and african blackwood.







let me know what you guys think, I hardly ever work with traditional (sort of) shapes.

I think it looks great! I just bought a calabash made in SA with an African blackwood bowl and so far it smokes great!

With that stem, though, bet no one would ever call that a clencher!

Wood is gorgeous. I think you should turn your talents to more "traditional" shapes! Your "traditional" shapes would be wild and wooly!

I imagine that your buttons are not meant to be held in the mouth, but for the pipe to be smoked while holding it in your hand. Is that right?

Ha, You know this is something I think about a lot. I must have had this pipe in my mouth 30 times while making it, trying to see how it felt. IMO it's really easy to clench and rest, but your teeth are open slightly wider obviously.... I've never found a classic button that feels good on my teeth. I think definitely need to try more pipes out...

Also, whenever I try to smoke a pipe (not ones that I've made, but other generic briar) while keeping it in my mouth, it's a terrible combination of drool, smoke in my nose and eyes and lungs, and just generally uncomfortable. Is this normal? haha.

Lol! By your description, I'm going to guess that you're smoking basket pipes. I bet if you picked up a pipe from anyone on this forum you would not experience... most of those things. Lungs sounds like a stylistic issue.

Seriously, though, get an artisan pipe with a comfortable button that fits your mouth and you'll find that a traditional pipe is much more pleasurable than you've experience so far. Unless I'm wrong and you're smoking a Rainer Barbi and just don't know what you're doing.
