My First Attempt at the Prince Shape

Post by wdteipen »

Here's my first attempt at the prince shape. It's harder than it looks to get just right. I think I should have gone a bit longer on the stem. Nice ring grain on this one on the bottom but the grain kinda broke up as it got closer to the rim. Let me know what you think and any advice on the shape.

Honestly Wayne I think that's pretty good. Prince's are weird, and as far as I can tell they are not quite a brandy (your pipe is headed to brandy), not quite an apple either, and a have pottish tendencies. I've done a few and never really felt like I got exactly what I wanted. They come out too tall or too angled or too fat.... it's easy to get them wrong somehow, and this one I think is pretty close to right in general proportion, but as I say, just a bit too brandied, perhaps.

But it's a super nice blast, and a super nice pipe.

Your slot is a little too square.

I think the "most right" thing about it is that you didn't continue the curve, hawkbill style - the stummel is "straight" and that's pretty necessary.

I agree with Sas.. nicely executed... except for the slot... I have yet to try the prince shape, but have it on my 'to do' list... someday

the only real criticism I will/can offer is the the stamp area should have been on the bottom of the stem and not on the side... but that is more or less personal preference

You need to polish the inside of that slot!

I'm working on one as well so it kind of depends on whose Prince you choose to emulate. Mine is tighter at the rim and heavier at the butt but they both look quite princely. I wasn't sure about the bottom; I think I've kept mine too flat. I would like for it to be able to sit but maybe that's just not part of the specs. I like the more spherical nature of yours.

Here's some info from a reliable looking site: http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Prince

Whether officially welcomed into the Prince Club or not, it's a great looking pipe.

How about that ring grain! Nice.

The only thing I don't care for (other than the Prince style as a whole) is the finish. It's not bad at all, just something about it doesn't seem to suit this particular pipe. Though it's really late on my side of the world and I could just really need some sleep.

BTW...am I the only one who thinks this sort of looks like Strawberry?

Nice prince! I'll agree on the finish, though. Just doesn't grab me.

That is a nice pipe Wayne. I really like the blast. The color was a nice change up too, perfect for the fall. It looks like something that would go up on the mantlepiece and taken down for a Sunday smoke (speaking of which).

Beautiful blast and I love that color. It the same color as the whiskey behind it! Nice.

Aesthetically, prince shapes, to me, are one of those shapes that I really feel are executed well pretty rarely and I can normally take 'em or leave 'em. I could definitely take this one. Nice job.

I do not care for the prince shape, but this one would definitely grab my attention. Stunning blast!
