Viking pipe and stand

Post by PipesByDesign »

A guy commissioned this as a gift for a buddy of his. Lots of fun to work on. The ship stand is basswood with a briar figurehead and the part the pipe actually rests on is cherry.

Wow. That's amazing.

How many hours does it take to create something like that? Looks like there has to be 20 or 30 hours of carving there?

Nice job though, really nice! I'd hate to smoke it though, as I'd be afraid to scorch his little Viking head!

Viking pipe and stand

Thats amazing! Some things just make you feel woefully inadequate. Handling Walrus Oosik and now looking at your carving abilities I might as well just die.
Not sure I want my hobby to turn into my job largely because I grow to hate my job....

Thanks all for the kind words.

Carving time was around 30 hours, although that was spread over two months. Hard to squeeze in time for pipemaking with my work schedule.

I've got others on my website http://pipesbydesign.wordpress.com if you want to check them out. As much as I love making pipes like this I am trying to branch into more "normal" pipes that I can crank out in significantly less time. I still plan on taking custom work like this, but it'd be nice to have pipes I can realistically turn out in a day or less and maintain a steady stock of.
