Photos For Critique

Post by RadDavis »

Guys,

When you want a critique of your work, please show pics of the pipe in profile, i.e., from the sides. These are the most important views, and almost nothing else is needed.

Pics from all angles other than the sides show almost nothing about the form of the pipe.

I just viewed a "Dublin" from every angle but the sides. It looks like it might be a nicely made pipe, but I can't even tell if it might be a Dublin.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the information Rad about the pictures taken from the sides. I keep that in mind on my next project.

Excellent tip, Rad. Sometimes we forget obvious stuff like that (and in my case all the damn time!)

Don't worry, I'm not singling you out. I'm mostly joking. It's a pet peeve of mine although I do think it shows attention to detail. It's sad when guy makes a really nice pipe and gets all the hard parts right but leaves stain in the chamber. If we're shooting for perfection then let's at least do the easy details.

I might also mention that the side views are what any potential customers want to see first.

Rad
Kinda like this? (I'll look for the top view, but the side view is what's important)

I particularly like the side views of upside down bent pipes. Just because it sets steady that way doesn't mean it's worth photographing that way. Who the hell ever holds a pipe upside down to study it's profile?

It really helps me understand the whole pipe better if there's some hint of the chamber in the almost-profile establishing shot. I also appreciate it when a photo includes some item that helps give it scale. I've never seen a shot of pipe that would qualify as a Product in Use pic but it might not be a bad idea for some enterprising pipe merchant.

The main thing I have gleaned from this thread is that Rad enjoys pictures of people's "pipes."

That would be me. I include an upside down profile pic of almost every pipe I post. I actually spend a good deal of time looking at my pipes this way when I'm making them. Most light sources are above, which obviously casts shadows on the bottom of the bowl. I find that if I turn my pipes upside down, I can really see the full shape of the bowl. Maybe it's Quack Magic, but I like it.
