Russian Tea

Post by bandkbrooks »

I was at my local coffee shop/roaster and I was looking at the Teas. I found a Russian tea and opened the jar to get a whiff. The smell of Latakia smacked me in the face. The tea leaves are indeed smoked. Anyone here ever try it?

I think I'll have a cup with a bowl of English tobacco and sit in my old leather chair next to the campfire.

very interesting... what's the name of the tea, i'll have to check that out. I've been on a kick lately trying different tea/tobacco combinations. so far my personal favorite has been madagascar vanilla and seven seas gold. (Celestial Seasonings/Mac Baren)

I'm not sure of the name. It's in bulk jars at my local shop. I'll see what I can find out.

Russian Tea

There is another smoked tea called Lapsang Suchong that is basically liquid campfire. You might like it. Also, if you guys are into scotch, Laphroaig has some very Latakia like notes.

I worked in a house once, owned (the house) by a very rich Russian immigrant. His mother or mother in law stayed home through the day, and she would make us some crazy-ass tea and served me animal crackers with it about 3 times a day. I always love stuff like that.

Lapsang Suchong is my absolute favorite tea. I can't get enough of the stuff.

I tried the Russian with and without cream. It's excellent. Liquid Latakia.

where do you get the stuff? Remember, I'm in north Idaho. The nearest china town is like, Seattle (if they even have one).

Coffee Bean Direct is a good source and ships quickly. Look under the Black Teas on their website.

From PuriTea you might wish to try Red Dragon Pearl. A superb black tea. If you ever like trying a green Oolong tea I cannot recommend enough trying Dong Ding Oolong. These last two will expand quite a bit in your infuser. I can get several infusions (large cups) of tea from an average tablespoon, or 4-5 of the pearls. You may wish to use less. My tea only steeps 1.5-2 minutes which is so unlike how I grew up brewing tea for 5-10 minutes.

Russian Tea

Andrew, your best bet is probably the same way you get your briar and ebonite...online. Numi makes some and they have decent distribution. I live in a pretty decent sized city, although without a China Town, and its still not easy to find. It's been a couple years since I had some, I think I might go searching...
