How much to charge
How much to charge
I've been asked by an individual to replace a stem on his Peterson XL90 Rock of Cashel. I have no clue what a typical repair like this costs. Does anyone have any ideas about what is fair? I plan on using a pre-fab stem. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Pre-fab is the way to go. Search PME for something like it. Unfortunately, you're going to spend a good chunk of your fee buying 12 of the things, but you can almost certainly use them for other pipes - just no p-lip crap.
For charges, check out J.H. Lowe and Mark Tinsky - that's the typical price for factory stem replacement.

Is it a P-lip?
Also, an XL 90 is a very fat shank - you'll have a hard time finding a prefab stem that thick.

ALL YOUR PIPE ARE BELONG TO US!

Fortunately its a fishtail stem, otherwise I'd be up a creek. I think I've found some pre-fabs that will do the trick. The shank is extremely fat, about 7/8" diameter and 3 1/2" long.Sasquatch wrote:Is it a P-lip?

J. H. Lowe charges $25 for a vulcanite stem replacement. Sound reasonable?

Check with Mark to see if he'll sell you one or two stems like the one you need.
