Peterson's Rosslare Sandblast - Bubbling Removal (Buff??)

Post by jacko »

Folks

I recently smoked my new sandblasted rosllare a bit hot and I noticed the black finish started get tiny pin head bubbles. I'm wondering if I hit it with tripoli / carnauba if I can get them out?

Thanks!

The only way to get those out would be to strip the finish and reapply it. I have no idea what Peterson uses on those, but I suspect it's going to be either shellac or polyurethane if it bubbled while hot.

Probably shellac, it softens melts at a relatively low temperature compared to acrylics or urethanes. If this is the case you may be able to restore it by rubbing the pipe with methyl alohol and dissolving the shellac a bit.

Either way - "a bit hot" doesn't sound like an adequate descriptor.

The pipe came with a strange bad taste, tried to save it by coating the bowl with (real) maple syrup. Fixed the taste issue but the first bowl burned awfully hot. Should have been a bit more careful in retrospect.

Peterson has a secret recipe "bad taste" that they build into their pipes somehow.

I have a Peterson. One. It took me almost two years to break it in. Tasted like a grizzly bear's butt forever.

WOW! It looks like you and that Huhn fellow have an affinity for butt. Sharing your experiences is both disturbing and disgusting :(

I'm pretty sure I'd only try that once and only if I was tricked into it. Sucking on a bear's butt for two years? Somethin' is wrong with you, sir.

And now you understand the depths of my depravity.

That and people kept telling me to push through the pain, that it would get better, you just had to break it in. Well, they were partially right. It got "okay" - it still isn't a great smoking pipe, but at least it tastes like tobacco now.
