Actually, I traded off the smaller 6x18 craftsman metal lathe for a sherline mini-mill so that I can make some of my own jaws among other things. And I do know that the Jet works, I haven't gotten to use it yet, but my buddy uses it quite often for drilling blocks and stem work.

As for living quarters, I hope your correct, as if I spend much more on tools and such, the wife will have me living in there.

Some nice shops so far, keep them coming. It's also my favorite part of a pipe makers pictures, after the pipes that is.

Screw the pipes, I am a man of hardware.

That said I will show you my modest pipe shop where two of us work after we set it up, which is in early January. The funny thing is that most of these pictures have really compiled into the idea I settled on and have now drawn and mocked up. So expect to see alot of your own pieces of inspiration and some of those little proprietary tools pictured.

It is gonna be dank!

Definitely keep posting, this is awesome and great insight.
There is nothing like being left alone again, to walk peacefully with oneself in the woods. To boil one's coffee and fill one's pipe, and to think idly and slowly as one does it.

Walle, There's something wrong with the sound on your video. I couldn't understand a word you were saying.

Actually, my shop is only clean when I'm not making pipes--it's twice as bad as yours otherwise! About once a month or so I have to clean up or I can't find anything.... You have a great workshop, Walle, and I enjoyed seeing you working on one of your wonderful pipes!

My favorite moment is at 3:34 in the video, when the camera man places his cigarette pipe on the shelf. Why did such an odd little thing fit in so perfectly in Walle's shop? :D

Thanks for sharing that video, Walle. Very cool. :)

Crap! It was just getting to the good part, the secret of those amazing textured surfaces ... Just a few more minutes and I could have signed up for the pipe in the hat trade, which I decided to skip this year since Walle is beyond my comprehension. :?

What a pity, Rad!

I mentioned your name three times in that video. Here comes the translation:

1. "I agree this looks silly, but Rad Davis taught me to do it this way."
2. "I´m wearing this blue shirt because Rad Davis likes the colour. See the painting at the wall? He made it. I believe..."
3. "Yes, Rad Davis stole this shape from me. But he sold it it at least."

I do like your blue shirt, Roger.

The rest of that translation is a bunch of German claptrap! I learned that word from Butch Weaver.

Some more of Butch's favorite words are: Cockamamie, Malarkey, 23 Skidoo, and Balderdash, I believe. Also Horse Pucky.

All of these apply equally to your translations. Except for 23 Skidoo. I'm not sure what that means.

Here's my two wood lathes. I burnt out the Delta midi motor so I bought the Rikon to replace it. I've since bought a variable speed conversion kit for the Delta to put it back in service. It's nice to use one for stems and inlays and one for drilling and shaping briar. At least until I can afford a metal lathe.

This is my new air compressor and sandblasting cabinet in the background. The compressor is a two stage 7.5 hp 80 gal. 175 psi Ingersol Rand.

Here is my sanding station. I have a Variable Frequency Drive and a 3 phase Baldor motor that I'll eventually get set up to replace this setup. Also pictured is my Jet dust collector. I don't quite have it set up right but it's a work in progress.

Here's another picture of my sandblasting cabinet and my bandsaw.

My long term plan is to build a separate workshop and move all this stuff out of the garage.

You are looking at it all wrong, Ernie. Tires on the roof is a statement of social responsibility. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Southerns were green before green was cool.

It also serves as kool seal on tin roofs during the summer. Not that I expect anyone here to even know what kool seal is...
