Tenon dust not ribbons???

I am using the jh lowe tenon turning tool and lately it seems like it is just grinding the tenon into dust rather than cutting the vulcanite into ribbons like I remember it doing. I have also replaced my triangle cutting tip. Any thoughts. Is this normal and am I crazy? I swear I remember cleaning up tight ribbon waste from the tenon rather than only the dust.

My thought too. Dull = dust, sharp = ribbons. It's true for turning tools, knives, planer blades, table saws, hand saws, chain saws, and probably also tenon turning tools.

It's been quite some time since I used my tenon turner, but I found that you need to have it turning at a very high speed, 1750+ rpm and the insert has to be very sharp.
I friggin' hated using the darn thing, due to inconsistent cuts.

Sometimes, you just get a shitty stem made of bad vulcanite, and no matter how you cut it, you end up with dust. Did you try a different stem from a different batch to see if this might be the case, or maybe an acrylic stem?

I've tried 5-6 different stems and same result. I have also tried rotating to a new triangle side, flipping the thing. I have one more cutter that I can try. Also Bruce I have it on a 1750 motor. Really frustrating it's chewing up all my stems. I'll call Tim tomorrow. I talked with Ron Fairchild yesterday who is apprenticing me in my pipe making and his thoughts were bad vulcanite like Kurt thought.
