Dye powder

Post by adryazad »

Hi all,

This is my first post here, I've read a little on the posts regarding water based stains. However, I do have a question.

I recently went to a craft store, and noticed a bottle of dye powder. Upon inquiring, the shopkeeper told me that it was meant to be diluted in water. I asked him if it was possible to dilute it in denatured alcohol but he didn't know.

Does anyone here know if I can dilute it with alcohol, or do i have to stick with using water?

Cheers,

Adry

Most things that are soluble in water are also soluble in alcohol as they are both fairly polar.

I have use both of powder, trans fast......and a liquid, transtint for years both made for water. I use alcohol with no problems. The last two years though I've branched out to include Feibling's leather dyes, very nice indeed.

Yes, most dye powders intended for mixing with water are also soluble in denatured alcohol and from my experience, (in furniture refinishing--and now pipe restoring), the dye powder mixed with alcohol stains more evenly than with water as a base for the stain. The water based stain, as you probably know, also raises the grain of the wood, which you then have to sand down, thus, sanding down/off your stain as well.

I dunno Bruce....at 3 or 4 dollars per bottle, and for a bottle that will ONLY last through a couple of hundred pipes, that's pretty crazy advice you're offering up. It's not like dimes and nickels grow on trees man.

Honestly speaking, I would love to use Fiebings' Leather Dye. I've scouted around Kuala Lumpur, yes its in Malaysia and the last time I managed to find it I bought Brown, and that's all that was available. Over here, crafts and DIY isn't really big when compared to the western countries like the U.S , or EU.

Now, I do wish to be able to dye my pipes anything other than brown, been to countless of leather, shoe repair shops looking for Fiebings' but to no avail. Hence why I'm looking at other alternatives, and I would really love to avoid shipping in from the U.S seeing that I might have problems with customs shipping liquids. Hence, why I have turn to my more learned brothers here in this forum to seek advice.

The other dye I managed to find is from Coxy. Which on the internet states "Coxy Black Colouring is a spirit based black permanent dye for smooth and grained leathers."

Heck, I've even began to wonder if I can use powdered Dylon Multipurpose Dyes to do the job.

*ps. Fiebings cost about 10usd for a 4oz bottle :)

cheers, and thats for the replies.

I'm assuming you mean it costs that much in Malaysia? It certainly isn't that much here in the States.

If you can't get it in Malaysia, you might want to consider ordering some powdered dyes from somewhere like PIMO, as those are alcohol dyes that are known to work for our purposes. They are nice and light, so international shipping shouldn't be too spendy. *shrug*

Here in South Africa I use an alacohol based leather stain which I get from wholesale leather suppliers. It's about 3$ for a bottle of 100ml. Shipping might be cheaper than from the US. PM me should you want to try it from this side.
