LA fires

Post by bikedoctor »

I think kbadkar is somewhere near the fires but was wondering if any other members were facing the CA flames.

Hi,

I'm in West Los Angeles.

Close enough to see towers of smoke to the east, but not really near the fires or threatened in any way this time.

Great to hear Gunnar. I knew you and kbadkar were close to it.

Hang in there.

Although I do live in LA, I'm in China right now on a business trip with the whole family (7-1/2 month pregnant wife, 8 year old boy, 3 year old girl), so we're all "safe". Thanks for the concern.

Where in LA are the fires? I live in Silverlake and have a great view of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Hills. I watched the Griffith Park fires from my yard a few years ago. I'd post pictures, but I'm not sure the Chinese gov't filters will let me get to Photobucket.

Hopefully I'm safer this year. The fires are in the Angeles Crest Forest/reserve, a few miles away across a couple of hills or so. A couple of years ago the fires were not much more than a 1/4 mile away. Five houses burned down just down the street from me. Bummer

Frank.

Hey Frank, didn't I see in the news this morning that the fire was to turn on the observatory and towers?

Not sure about Griffith, but I recall seeing an emergency warning last night that Mount Wilson was threatened, primarily the communication towers.

No fires around my neighborhood this year, just a fine layer of ash on my tomatoes. Here's a picture of the Griffith Park fires from a few years back. The fires were under control at this point.

Hi,

Cool.

Nice exposure.
What was that shot on? What was the exposure time, 4 seconds, 7 seconds?

A Canon EOS 30D. I don't remember exactly the exposure time (nor settings), but judging by the movement of the helicopters, I'd guess 5 seconds.
