Well, I was finally able to read the grain on a block to get exactly the result I wanted. Too bad this pipe is just a hair wide for the P&T contest as I would have loved to enter it
Update: I have measured the pipe with my neighbors calipers rather than by eye and the pipe does BARELY pass muster on the width!

It is indeed the leather stains. It is a first coat of Medium brown with Buckskin on top.
