E-mail from apprentice cobbler looking for a gift pipe?

Post by sethile »

Hello all,
I just received a very flattering E-mail from someone named Bill Dean (William Dean, wndean@gmail.com) with an interesting story about being a an apprentice cobbler, and claiming to admire my work while not being able to afford it, and asking me to gift him a pipe. Rather bold, and a couple of things seemed to indicate he was not all that familiar with my lack of standing in the pipe making community. My guess is he has E-mailed several of us, if not many. Anyway, just a heads up in case this is a scam, or just an overly bold attempt to get a batch of hand made pipes when one can't afford them.

I'd be interested in knowing if he has E-mailed anyone else.

Messages like that crop up from time to time. Always someone looking for a handout. You'd think they must be successful now and again if they keep at it.

I usually respond and tell the person that if they'd like one of my pipes, then they'll have to pay for it as I am a starving artist and can't afford to feed my young children  .

You're not the only one to receive this message.

I got the very same mail. I knew he was familiar with me and my work because he started with To Whom it may concern.

Ah, that's what I thought. It's nice to know I'm in good company. I'd hate to think my pipes were the only ones deemed worthy of not buying

Thanks guys!

I got the same email. Looks like he shotgunned an email to bunch of pipe makers looking for freebies. My hesitation stemmed from a similar email I got a while back that turned out to be a scammer looking for freebies so that he could turn around and sell them.

You know...... If we were really feeling mean, we could send him something really revolting addressed from the lot of us. It would get the point across... 8)

I don't think there's any need -- I think he pretty much got rode out of town on a rail over on ASP. Somebody sent him the thread. Any odds on him paying back his student loans?

I suggest we pipe makers begin to email cobblers and ask for a free sample of shoes. When we get some nice shoes then maybe we can spare a pipe.
