Outside the Comfort Zone

Post by JSPipes »

I'm starting to experiment a little. I think seeing Jeff Gracik's pipes in person gave me some inspiration. So I thought I'd give some of those "creases" a go. Here's my latest run.

In this case, the crease serves to delineate between the straight grain on the side and the birdseye on the bottom.

I love the way that you have captured the grain here.

I never really appreciated how hard this was to do until I attempted a blowfish on my own. Suffice it to say that my first attempt at a blowfish is still unfinished and will probably become a shop pipe, once I whittle it down a little more.

But yeah, very nice.

Really nice bud! The line on the bottom would have been cleaner if you could have kept it strait, but that's a small critique on a great pipe.

Great idea. Hope you don't mind if it gets "borrowed"! ;)

I have several sketches of pipes I'd like to make with a similar design, but as your post title states, "out of the comfort zone", I just haven't gone there yet. Great job on this one. Looks good and seeing it "in person" as opposed to as a concept helps get my head around ways to proceed. Good stuff!!

The difficult thing about pipes like that is keeping the stain even, without having bright edges and scratches all down in the crease. Pipes with lots of creases are a good way to make yourself insane..

As opposed to memorizing every horror movie made since 1945?

That doesn't take work, that just comes naturally.

And BTW, I actually start with Tod Browning's "Dracula" in 1931....
