Bowl burn out.

Post by Pegoda »

Is there anything besides cigar ash that is used to repair a burn out in the bowl? Can briar dust be mixed with epoxy to do the repair? Thanks for any help.

Hi Bob,

I wouldn't use epoxy inside the bowl. Epoxy will re-softened with heat. Could add some nasty flavor as well as a major health hazard to your smoke.

Pipe mud would probably be your best bet.

Pipe mud for sure, made with water and cigar ash or some folk use honey and cigar ash.

Cigar Ash

Post by Pegoda »

It's a shame I can't use pipe tobacco ash, it's up to my butt in here. LOL. I wonder if only one cigar will provide enough ash?

One cigar should be plenty, I think.

And I've been thinking that you could drill out the spot that is burnt out and cut a plug of that size from scrap briar. Then use a high temp epoxy to glue it back into place. Then work it back down to flush with the bowl and refinish.

Once you get a little cake over it, it should be fine.

I wouldn't put any plastic product anywhere near a burning ember. High temp plastic or not. If a dowl is needed, simply ensuring a tight fit should be all that's necessary.

However, at that point, I think I'd just scrap the pipe and make/buy a new one.
