What's the preferred method for doing stem extensions or inlays. I started doing stem/stummel extensions by gluing the contrsating wood or acrylic to the stummel. The reason I've been doing this is because I don't have a lathe yet in order to extend the tennon on a stem to allow for the extra material. I've been working with pre-made stems. Should the extension be added to the stummel or the stem? Does it make a difference?
I was reading somewhere on the forum where somebody did an extension in contrasting wood. They drilled the wood and then added some Delrin to the center before drilling for the air hole. What's the purpose of the Delrin? Why couldn't you just epoxy the contrasting wood to the stummel and then drill for the air hole?
