I'm much happier with the shape on this pipe. I still have some ongoing issues to hash out, but I feel like I made some progress on this one, and I ran into some decent grain considering this was a very inexpensive ebauchon.
Specs (in inches): The bowl is 1.7 by 1.725 tall, and its overall length is 6.1. Tobacco chamber is .75 (3/4) by 1.6.
I think the stem insert is Bocate. Came in a grab box of exotics. I had trouble getting the insert to match well with the dye I used for the stummel, which was Chocolate brown. I ended up dying the insert with a little of the Chocolate brown and some Red Mahogany to get it to tone in a little better. The color of the insert seemed especially critical due to its size, which was not in the original plan for this pipe (I had some issues while drilling that necessitated a much longer stem than I had planned). The insert might have benifited from some shelac as well, but so far I've just been using Carnuba. Here are a bunch more pics:
I picked this color of dye to help with a couple of flaws. I liked the grain--nothing extraordinary, but a nice mix of flame and birdseye. Anyway, I could not bare to rusticate this one as I liked the grain too much, and I'm not great at rustifaction yet. The flaws are obvious still, but not distracting. I had trouble with alignment on the draught hole on this one. It is well off center. I'm still sorting this out, but I think I've narrowed it down to a combination of layout, set up in the drill press vice, and very likely some drift due to using a long aircraft bit with the drill press. I REALY want the next pipe to have much better drilling. See my thread called Layout/Alignment problems in the stummel section for the gory details.
So, another great learning experience! As always, tear it up guys, I'm really wanting to learn!

Thanks guys... I had last week off for Spring Break here, so I had a little extra time for pipes. All I can think about right now, and I'm having a great time with it!
As for stamps, when the time comes I'm going to have one made by Paul Argendorf:
A&M Stamps
55 Windsor Avenue - Mineola, NY 11501
PH:516-741-6223 FAX: 516-248-4202
He comes highly recommended by folks here on the forum, but I have a bunch more work to do before I'll want to sign my name to a pipe. Meanwhile, hoping I will eventually want to do something, I have bought two sets of number/letter stamps from Harbor Frieght (1/8" for $8.99 and the 1/16" for 4.99):
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... number=800
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=37154
The 1/8th looks about right for initials, and the 1/16th looks about right for other stuff. These are a nice and cheap alternative, and competely flexable in terms of what to mark out with them.
I expect I'll need to make several more "Etudes" that will need to just stay here with me, but soon I hope to come up with some that are worthy to give away to family and friends, and maybe work my way up to a PITH contribution Hint Hint? :dunno: Those will get stamped with my initials and Etude #, and maybe the year (using the Harbor Frieght sets). Sometime down the road I hope to make some pipes worthy of something more. If and when that happens I'll get a nice stamp made up buy A&M. Yeh, I'm thinking about designs for that too, but that's WAY premature! Right now I need to spend that money on more blocks and vulcanite to distroy.

Seth,
You're improving with every pipe--your progress is exceptional given this is only your sixth pipe. You're doing really well and I can't wait to see your work 12 months from now.
As for stamps, Brownell's actually has 3/32" stamps for marking gun barrells--I prefer 3/32" myself.

Dave,
Thanks very much for the encouragement. It means a lot coming from you. I'm really looking forward to getting good at this, and at times I catch myself getting impatient with my progress. Then I have to remind myself that the skills I enjoy the most are the ones I've had to work pretty hard for. If that's any indication, I'm really going to love this if and when I get good at it
Thanks for the tip on Brownells. Had not see those, and you're right, 1/8 seems big, and 1/16 seems small. 3/32 sounds like a great option! I also noticed they have a very cool looking guide:

Have you tried that? Looks like it could really help with keeping the markings straight.
Thanks again, Scott
