new bit needed...

Post by bscofield »

I need advice on what type brand of bit to get for facing the end of my shanks. The one I have leaves groves on the face. Since I'm not always sure how thick the shank will be I sometimes expose those groves to the outter rim and then make more work for myself.

What sort/brand of bit should I be looking for that would do a better job at facing?

If you're facing with a wood lathe or drill press, I suggest getting a "precision ground" forstner bit. They cost a bit more, but they are *so* worth it. I don't have any grooves on the shank face when using these. I got a number of them at the local Woodcraft - about $15-$18 per, I think.

I just bought a router bit for that. It's called a "bottom clearing bit". It works great!

Ben,

It also might be helpful to grind the grooving points off the edges of a forstner bit. That will enable you to make grooveless facing on the shank and the center point will still help make sure that the bit does not wander.
