Stems for sale

Post by TreverT »

We have some stems for sale! We've accumulated a lot of excess stock over the decades and I want to move it out so we can have that inventory space for more targeted uses. These are all ebonite stems we bought with our French workshop purchase 20 years back. They're mostly churchwarden stems and P-lips, including a lot of the longer churchwarden stems that are hard to find now.

They are for sale in lots of ten ONLY. Prices are listed on the catalog page.

I am NOT getting into the pipe parts business. This is all excess, and when it's sold out, it's gone, no more being ordered. Some of the stems are 45-60 years old and in some odd shapes, particularly a couple of the churchwardens. So, all that said, you can shop from what we've currently got posted on our site here:

Thanks for your time!

Hey Trevor!
I ordered a pack of the long ones and meant to ask: are they drilled? I know they need a tenon, but drilling too, or just some clean-up?

thank you!

They're all drilled. Clean-up varies from model to model, with some just needing a light sanding and compounding while others need flashing removed, heavy sanding, etc.

Giving this a bump! We've still got tons of these to move. I checked the other day and we've sold 230 churchwarden stems and I can't even tell any are gone. It's also worth mentioning that larger orders tend to get a lot of extras and freebies thrown into the box, so go click those order buttons!

Inventory space...

We all know it's because you're tired of your Living In France Memories being triggered every time you come across stuff like this, and repairing holes in walls gets expensive.

Mostly it's just in the math. I make maybe 2-3 LB churchwardens a year that use those stems and I'm cutting even that down because I hate making churchwardens, and I'm 56, so... 1000 stems would last me for the next 500 years.

Yep, pretty spot on. I've done a few handcut churchwarden stems over the years but don't any more, so the only churchwardens I ever end up making are Ligne Bretagnes and even then they're a ridiculous amount of work to try and get a paying hourly wage out of. What folks don't understand is that yes, you can finish a crappy one pretty fast, and it will be one long ripple and warble from end to end, but actually planing the lines out smooth takes forever. And yeah, the expectation is that they'll be the same price as the normal stems, and half the time you get, "Hey, can you make a churchwarden stem option for this for free?"

Thankfully I have my own venting area...

Yeah, right?

I wanted to buy a piece of ebonite from Trever last year, and POLITELY asked if he wouldn't mind attaching a piece of briar to it, and then carving the briar and rubber into a finished pipe. Hell, I said he could even choose the shape, as long as it was half bent, had a curved shank, was at least 6" long, and had no flaws of any kind in the briar.

You know what he said? Without even THINKING about it? Vous me rendez fou. Va-t'en, imbécile!

Customer service is dead, indeed... :(

You guys are just adorable. Like baby minks.

We shipped out another box of stems today - A bunch of churchwardens and some extra bonus stuff. The guys who are buying in bulk are getting all sorts of goodies added in just for taking this stuff off my hands and being easy to deal with. Next we'll probably start including fifty pounds of random pen parts with every hundred dollar order.

Yeah George, I mean what an asshole, he said the same to me it's not like I was asking for much, I was quite happy to do the bowlcoat and stamping myself.

I even offered an extra 5 bucks!

MORE stems for sale!

We've added new stem shapes to our Pipemaking Supplies page, along with some much-requested Mix Packs for an alternative to buying a full box of the same shape. Also, bands!

Update - Even more stems available! I've just added some square-shank designs, a bent bulldog, and a new Mix Pack for anyone looking to tackle some challenging shapes. Come buy these things, I want this shelf space back! Once these stems are cleared out they're all gone for good. You can see everything currently available on our Supplies page here -

One more note -

I was just looking at our filter components while finding a tenon for a 9mm Fat Dwarf order, and it made me wonder about selling those parts. I've got a bunch and considering I make maybe three 9mm pipes a year and I'm nearing 60 years old now, well, you can do the math... On the down side, it probably wouldn't be worth it to sell them either, because they'd be super low profit and likely not worth the labor time of posting them on the site and then boxing and shipping the two orders we'd get for filter tenons every year. Still, if anyone needs 9mm tenons or 6mm tenons, give me a shout.

A quick reminder - We STILL have a lot of excess stem stock I want to get rid of. I think we've managed to clear out one bag, almost, of the churchwardens but still have about 6 to go. Here's our Supplies page including all the new stuff that's been added, like the bent bulldog stems for any hobbyists who REALLY feel like challenging themselves.

https://talbertpipes.com/product-category/supplies/

Note that it's expanded to two pages of stuff now, there's a 1,2 at the bottom!

Bump, bump! We have now sold out of the pre-turned bent P-lips and they're gone from the catalog page, but we still have a lot of the bigger P-lips available plus STILL plenty of churchwardens to sell. Check the Supplies link in the above post to browse available stems & misc!
