Looked rough but the stummel was worth the effort for sure.

George, can I suggest an alternative numbering/naming system for the videos. The multipart nature doesn't worry me but I find it hard to watch them in order as either there is no number or the number is at the end which doesn't show in the title I get on youtube.
Even something as simple as just putting a number at the beginning of each video so for example that this series is videos 78-90.
I very much enjoy your videos but have watched some out of order and got myself awfully confused lol.

10-4 on better numbering needed. Thanks for the feedback.

George, thank you for the videos. As per usual, I learned a lot.
I have one specific question about the Johnston and Murphy Shoe Cream- what is the base/solvent?
The cheap drugstore polish to which you refer in the video has a pronounced petroleum odor and I would hesitate to use something of that nature on a pipe.
Thanks again.

I'm not sure what the carrier is. Not being a food item means ingredients don't have to be listed on the container.

I just gave it a good whiff, though, and there's actually very little smell of any kind. A faint earthiness is all, nothing weird or off-putting.

Then, being curious, I did the same with a container of Fiebing's. That stuff is practically violent. Massive alcohol blast with lots of ester-y lingering notes.

I've never noticed any smell coming off a J&M stained pipe when it's hot, either. In fact, I've been using it about eight years without problems or complaints of any kind.

For whatever reason it isn't sold online. You have to go to one of their boutique-y retail stores. Why do it that way? No idea.

Yes.

Looks like they started doing the online thing after all.

Enough people bitched about it, probably. lol

PS -- One of the reviews says it indeed smells bad. If so, they either changed the formula, or the different colors also smell different. All I've ever used is black.

Another question George.
I note that the angle between the lip and the blade of the bite area in this repair was done with a radius rather than 90 degrees because that was the way Dunhill did it in 1961.
I am curious about your general feelings about this area on artisan pipes.
I personally find it a bit more difficult to obtain a nice radius, and I have several tools modified in a similar manner to those which you used on this restoration.
I also feel that once such a radius is obtained, it is both easier to polish and to maintain, and I find it more attractive.
Do you have any general comments to make? You didn’t seem to care for technique on a previous artisan pipe that you repaired-possibly a Baldi?

I definitely prefer a radiused crease. Functionally better in every way with no shortcomings.

The engineering trade-off happens at fabrication time. Trickier than most people would guess to execute routinely & reliably. The gotcha lies in removing material "in two directions at once".

Baldi does a full-on curved shield sort of button that's extravagantly sculpted and overkill for normal-sized pipes. No need to go that far. Everyone I know who's messed with that sort of thing (Asteriou is a good example) abandoned it after a while.
