Post by magruder »

Latest efforts. Please feel free to comment pos or neg.
Tom Eltang and Jody Davis both saw Bent Acorn @ CORPS and both said "make Billiards".
So latest is my first Billiard.
Thanx to all and best regards,
Steve

Steve

Tell us how you rusticated the first pipe.

Hey Steve,

Nice looking pipes! I really like the rustication in the first one. On the second one, is the bowl canted forward just slightly or is the picture messing with me?

Great job on both!

Hi Steve,

Nice pipes! That's a much better "first billiard" than mine was! :)

It may be canted a little to far forward, but that may be the pic. About 3-5 degrees is what you want . The bowl rim should be at 90 degrees to the centerline of the bowl, which it looks like you got. The proportions look good.

The only suggestion I have is to make the bowl a little more barrel shaped. Just a tiny bit more bulge in the middle on the front & back of the bowl (doesn't take much at all) rather than an almost continuous flair. And bring the rim in just a tiny bit.

Hope this helps!

Thanx for the kind words guys.

The rustication on the Bent Acorn is the ubiquitous Dremel and a small tip.

Yes, the billiard is canted too far forward.

Rad, thanx for the pointers. I agree it needs to be barrel shaped. I ran out of wood to do that and still keep a decent wall thickness. The pipe was getting quite short because I was grinding away a pit on the rim. So it is more of a canted pot than a billiard, but that's what this was about...learning how.

I really appreciate all the input from all.

Best,
Steve

Steve, did you leave all the marks on the top of the bowl on purpose? Just wondering...

Nice pipes. I like the shape of the first and the finish and shape on the second. The rustication ain't my style, but I think I react that way to that style of rustication just because I've seen it on too many old grabows (not that there's anything wrong with a grabow... ).

Anyway, nice couple of pipes!

Geez,you guys are sharp.

It's ugly wax buildup. I was in a hurry to shoot the photos. The top is smooth.

Thank you. I will post new photos when I get the stem completed, along with measurements, grading, etc. It is probably the most complex shape I have tried yet. It was time consuming cutting and sanding those inside corners on both sides, but I think it adds a lot to this pipe, and I enjoyed making it. It is something a little different.
