What have you got for tooling - how are you fitting the stem for example, and what are you using for shaping?

I'm using belt/disk sander and dremmel for shapping. I have a drill press with a forestner bit and a tenon turning tool. Initially I had the transition looking good until I did the imitation ivory. I just need to rethink how I'm doing things.

Yeah, everything has to be really perfectly machined or it gets wonky fast. If you are building a ring onto a stem and only have the drill press, my advice is to make a ring with a flat side (ie hit the ring material with a forstner, then drill a hole through it, and put it aside), then mount the stem material in the drill press, and spin your tenon etc, then epoxy the ring on (flat side facing the cut shoulder of the pipe), then come back and face it off with the tenon tool again.
This stuff's easier with a lathe of some kind!
