Beginner Question on Stem alignment with Delrin tenon

Post by TallazPiper »

So I was gifted an old Harbor Freight wood lathe and I have a 100 drill press from Home Depot. Trying to use a delrin tenon the problem I can't seem to fix is the alignment of my stem and stummel. I can't get them to be perfectly square and there seems to always be some space between them. I think this is due to not being able to fit the delrin perfectly straight into the stem. I know this can be done on my drill press. Any tips or link to a previous post or video?

Thanks!

One possibility is just that your machinery isn't sturdy enough to handle whatever tool you're using to face the shank and/or stem before inserting the tenon. Another is that you're moving the stem or shank between facing the shank and stem and drilling the mortise(s). George did a video on how to replace a tenon that shows a fool-proof technique of fitting a tenon properly with no gap. His solution is to fit the tenon a bit loose in the mortise and allow the epoxy to cure while the stem is aligned with the mortise. I think it's more reliable than any other method I've seen, but it shouldn't take the place of properly facing the shank and stem and drilling the mortise without adjusting them between operations.
