Who made dat?

Post by Sasquatch »

Sooo... I had an awesome weekend. A customer came up to visit me and learn some crafting, he brought about 100 dollars worth of beer and about the same amount of premium tobacco, LGF, Silver Flake, King Charles, etc. We had a blast, and he managed to make a pipe for his father.

On sunday another friend showed up, also with beer, also with tobacco, and many pipes ranging from Larrysons to Uber-grade Danish stuff.

We repaired this one, you know, got the finish even, took out the sanding scratches, got the airways lined up and refined the slot a little, nothing major.

But....

Who made dissa pipe, any guesses?

Hmmm... The bowl shape looks mighty Chonowitschy, as does the saddle length and button shape.

It's kinda difficult to tell from that one pic...
Can I win anything by guessing? :D
Is it a Sandahl pipe?

Hold on.

I just noticed this part:
...got the finish even, took out the sanding scratches, got the airways lined up and refined the slot a little...
That's beginner stuff.

Meaning--unless that was just a towel-snap swipe at who actually made it because they would never do those things---no one would likely have heard of them.

If you had to realign the drillings and what not it's probably a Cryder. Oh wait it's a billiard. Nevermind.

Just a towel-snap swipe for sure. The pipe is excellently made.

I'm guessing Ernie Markle.

Subtle things. The dome on the rim, proportions, the button from what I can see, the curve going from the saddle to the bit, the stain and blast style. Of course I could be way off base, but that's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

I was going to say Markle, but it looks too good for that :P

Very much his style and stain colour, button doesn't seem to fit though.

No it is indeed Ernie's, and it's super perfect, I just wondered if people would recognize it as directly as that or if it would just fall into a category of "Danish Style handmade, well-executed" and leave people guessing all over the map. The fact that George thought it might be Danish tells me a lot and the fact that there weren't 7,500 wrong guesses also does. :)
