critique my transition

While waiting on my larger stem material to get here, I decided to play a little with another shape. Since I've had trouble getting my transitions down I thought I would have you guy's critique this before I go further. Unfortunately it has a couple pits that I will have to fill, I don't want to rusticate this one.

The bottom looks good. The top and sides need to be a bit more defined.

After I posted this, I studied it for awhile and did exactly what you said before you posted.

Basically on ANY shape, but it shows up most on these cherrywood types (and acorns - stuff where the shank is not at the bottom of the bowl), you want to carry whatever line you established with the bowl shape right through to the bottom - if it's straight, make it all straight, if there's a curve, make it a single uniform geometric curve - I've added one here just so you can see your deviation *at this angle* - of course, it has to be right at every angle, that's what's so hard!

Sas has the right idea, but didn't quite take it far enough to achieve true balance and elegance.

Add this to what he said, and you'll be all the way there:

I like it George, but only if you make the stem for me. I am super impressed with your stems, absolutely gorgeous. Maybe someday I can do one 1/4 as good as yours. :notworthy:

40 years ago, there was a carver who actually did stuff like that:

I looked up this carver on Pipedia. He was a contemporary and we are the same age, but I never heard of him. Guess that I was too insular. I met a few carvers back then including Ann Julie, but never got out of Baltimore.
I have to say that I wouldn’t have liked his stuff then and still don’t like it now.
Ah well, check out my signature.

Why does this remind me of the old kool-aid pitchers?

The day George found out about Photoshop was the beginning of the end of pipemakersforum.com.

On a constructive note (ahem..heehee), I like this pipe. The only other thing I see is that it appears you have a slight reverse taper on the shank and stem. One rule of reverse tapers is that it must look intentional/deliberate, otherwise it just looks like a mistake. A subtle taper would look better on this shape.
