Spherical Bowl

Post by RDPowell »

I'm attempting to shape a 2" Spherical bowl, anyone got any suggestions on the simplest way to accomplish this?
I turned it on my lathe from pole to pole on one side and along it's equator on one side to give me something to go by
after drilling the chamber and draft. I also cut a straight shank about an 1/8" from the bottom of the bowl. Needless to say this
aint one of the easy ones to do, having to keep it round all the way around. So why did I choose it, cause I wanted to
see if I could. Any suggestions would certainly help, if not now, on the next one.

Make a template with a 2" circle cut out to slide over the stummel to check by as you go. It will give you a better idea of exactly where to take off more wood.

Make a mandrel that is a tight fit in the bowl and put the stummel back on the lathe. Make a half circle template with a 1" radius and use that to check your progress.
