House Building in the Jungle...

We all make stuff other than pipes, so here's a place where "anything goes" as far as showing off some of your projects and other hobbies.

House Building in the Jungle...

Post by JMG »

I posted on here about 6 months back about a slabbing trip I made into the village I now live in. Well, I thought you guys might like to see some pictures from the house building process. Every piece of lumber in my house was cut down and slabbed by myself or my co-workers...except for the plywood floors and the 4mm plywood on the walls. However, my porch floor was all slabbed lumber, though. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of my house with the porch on before I came out for this break. My house is still just wrapped in tarps until I get time to slabbed siding for it.

One of the pines I slabbed to build my porch and a few cabinets. It was a solid hour hike up the mountain behind my house to get to these trees...very steep. Carrying the chainsaw, gas, mill, etc. up was no fun at all. Carrying the lumber back down was even less fun.

Here's a kitchen cabinet I made from the pine...

This is my daughter's room. We were still sleeping under mosquito nets at the time b/c I hadn't gotten the house sealed up enough by then.

I have about 1,300 watts of solar panels on my roof (the others are on the other side) and later I mounted my solar hot water heater next to these panels.

Still a long way from done...

Our short-wave. While we are in the tribe this is our only form of communication with the outside world.

That is pretty amazing, it still amazes me what people can do with some basic tools and good old fashioned know how.

Incredible! I can only imagine how rewarding it is to construct your own home and in such a beautiful place! You may have explained this previously, but how are you gaining access to the internet?

When I saw you posting, I wanted to bug you for updated pics. You read my mind.
Awesome amount of progress there ! Sure looks like you're in it for the long haul.
Going to look great with siding.
I have a special request for pictures of any reptiles you come across. PNG has huge diversity, and most of them cant be found in the pet trade over here. Would love to see them if you have any.
