dugouts

So I started making these last fall, they sell in the smoke shops or head shops along with the pipes and hippy culture stuff. I'm also making small hardwood pipes for those types of stores. They're a "dugout" so there's a space to keep your tobacco or "smoking mixture" and then a small pipe that looks like a cigarette. these ones are made from zebrawood, wenge and lacewood right to left. I make some other sizes the big ones you can keep a ligther inside. could post more photos if anyone's interested.

thanks I love working with exotics. I finish them on a buffing machine.. picture is a bit fuzzy but they come out real shiny.

Hey what do you use for the hinge on those? I want to make a dugout for a friend but I haven't yet decided on what to use for a hinge. I bought small wood screws with the unthreaded part right below the cap so that the top can rotate. any advice you're willing to share?

I use a black oxide socket head screw. more for appearance than function any type of small wood screw will friction fit a lid. sand lid and top of box to 220 and use a wood thats hard enough to hold the screw without stripping. made some of these out of briar a while back maybe should post photos

Here's some pics of a dugout Doug made for me out of briar. He actually made a few for me, but this is the one I use the most. This was left natural, just polished and waxed and it has darkened nicely over time.

I ended up using a Delrin tenon glued into the body of the dugout as a hinge. It works really well and the top is removable.
