Did you drill the center at first or just carved your way through while progressing with the spiral?

I worked a spiral first. Originally I didn't plan on it being hollow. I was drilling a hole in the center as a place to hold a pick, but was off center and the drill bit came through the shallow part of the spiral so I then filed the spiral through and came out with this.

It's a wood called "Kwila." It's real common here in Papua New Guinea.
