Just about anything wet will help the sanding go faster and easier. Some people will even wet sand with water, but I think that is counterproductive. I will usually sand dry until I put the first coat of oil on. Then, if there are problems, I will wet sand with the finish I am going to use. This works great if there are large pores I want to fill, or I have some small bits of tearout I cannot get rid of. The dust and oil create a slurry that fills the pore or defect with a repair that is virtually invisible, and matches subsequent coats of finish perfectly. If you want to try a very nice oil that goes on well and has a much higher solids content than most other oils on the market, Google Bush Oil. The guy who makes it is up in New York near Albany I think, and it is great stuff. I have used it with success on some pipes I have made.
