Castello? Or maybe David Letterman, judging by that gap?

It's a Castello. Model 65, in fact, which is one of their trademark shapes.

I didn't intend to make this a "guess what brand?" thing, though. Just that one of the world's best known makers produced and shipped it. Widely regarded as a "high grade" maker.

Or maybe David Letterman, judging by that gap?
Indeed. Good one.

The gap is something that can be fixed, though. The axial misalignment of the mortise can't.

The screechy dissonance of a prestige company producing a pipe that would get called out in an instant on THIS board---one that's full of beginners---is why I posted it. Also, in case someone had a possible explanation for how that could even happen.

I wonder if the tenon got heated and put in off-axis from the stem. That's the nicest possible explanation for what happened.

Castello is inconsistent with details like stem fit and alignment - the shaping on this pipe is... okay, but not great. Essentially the stem looks like it was jammed on a few degrees crooked.

I love Castellos, those of you who know me have seen a Castello in my mouth on many occassions. But I certainly think you have to look hard at a 300 dollar pipe that sports such details.
