#5 Lovat

Post by Jakub P. »

Hello folks. It's been a long, long time since my last visit on PMF. Long story short, I needed a time to collect some funds to implement some major changes in my workshop. Once again I reach out for your help.

Self critique:
- Mouthpiece could have been done better. But it was my first hand cut stem.
- Buffing is uneven. I didn't notice it untill I took the photos.

I'll be gratefull for any comments.

Regards,
Jakub

Welcome back, Jakub.
This is a nice pipe, and for a first hand cut stem, you did well.
The symmetry and transition appear to be spot on.
The vent in the tobacco chamber is very precise, but I am wondering if it's low central position may not have an adverse effect on the smoke at the bottom of the dottle.
I think it might look a little better with a forward cant on the bowl- 3-5 degrees.
Also there appears to be a slight flare of the stem at the shank/stem junction. I suspect that you were trying to preserve the spool shape of your stem enhancement and didn't finish that area as well as you could have.
My personal opinion is that the enhancement doesn't add anything, and by virtue of the fact that it stopped you from cleaning up the line in that area, actually detracted from it.
Other than these quibbles, good job.

Bowl shape looks pretty decent, but the shank needs an ever so slight taper towards the stem. without it, it will always appear to taper the other way.
I'm not a fan of the dent in the accent, it would look better with a straight line in my opinion.
