I'm pretty tempted to try.

I am really interested in doing this but was curious about a few things... Are there any stipulations on the grade of briar, stem material, etc.?

In past years we've agreed that it must be briar, not olive or morta or other material. Grade of the briar makes no difference. Stem can be vulcanite/ebonite, acrylic or any other commonly used material, the important part being commonly used.

Looking at the votes so far, I'm wondering if something along the lines of "not-round shank with cap" is in order

The votes are in! This year's PITH pipe will be an oval shank. Shape or feature wise, this is the only requirement. Let's talk deadline. How does end of July work for everyone?

I'm in. An oval shank sounds like a nice challenge...and a good way to lose some sleep.

I'm still in. I suspect that either of Mr Chheda's shapes will fill the bill for an oval shank, but I like the one one the left. It will come down to the individual, maker whether one is more flat.
July is good for me.

July should be great. To be clear, by Oval Shank we mean in general a shank cross section which is roundish , but not perfectly so, right? Or are we placing more constraints on what exactly an "oval" is?

To repeat, an ellipse (a mathematically define geometric shape) is an oval, but an oval may or may not be an ellipse.
I think most of us think of an oval as a symmetric flattened circle a la a Canadian or lumberman.
Correct me if I am mistaken, Smurf.
