Military Stem Ferrules

Post by dansutherlin »

Is there a place that sells ferrules similar to the silver ones used on Peterson pipes?

Tim West might have some. Worth a call, anyway.

Have you ever considered making your own by spinning them on the lathe? I would imagine Peterson's are stamped out of who knows what then nickel plated.

I've considered it for about 2 seconds, and realized I have no idea what I'm doing. I might play with it at some point, but I can't waste a week learning to make 25 cent caps either.

Spinning metal is lot harder than you might think. It took a lot of work to spin up a few silver ferrules for pipes, not something I want to repeat in a hurry.

Doing it manually is somewhat of an art (a lost one at that). I believe it was the Brits that perfected it a long time ago for silverware. Pretty much all CNC these days. Comes in handy for really deep parts that would be horrendously expensive to tool up utilizing progressive stamping dies. Volume is the deciding factor.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I've located a source but I won't know for sure until he gets back from Chicago. I'll let you know what I find out.
