How should this transition look?

Post by John Griffin »

Howdy friends! This is my first post so bear with me please. I am working on my second pipe from a kit and am almost done rough shaping but noticed that the stem is different from the stem in my first kit and was wondering how the transition should turn out. I have found that this was the part that I struggled with the most on my first pipe and was bracing myself to take it on in this next project to find out it will be completely different from the first. Please give me some guidance friends. Thank you in advance ImageImage

Please be more specific. What transition, exactly, are you referring to?

The transition from shank to stem. Sorry for being vague

Not many options. That's a (more or less) classically shaped stummel, and a freehand-friendly "stick" stem. They don't play well together, stylistically.

A company called Willmer had a time in the late 70's when they combined the two, but it isn't seen often as a general thing.

Thank you very much for the visuals that helps a lot so I guess the main thing will be to try my best to get it as symmetrical and uniform as I can

I might add that when looking at George's photos, I notice that the shanks are roughly the same diameter as the widest part of the stem on those Willmers.
You might consider taking off a bit of material all around. Your teeth and jaw may thank you if you are a clencher. You only need 3/8" or so of briar around the chamber.
