what's this in my pipe

Post by kamkiel »

Hi everyone! I have a question for the more knowledgeable Pipers on the forum. I have a pipe that has this metal thing screwed into the bottom of the bowl. At first, I thought it was some sort of plug, but now I'm not so sure. It is a pain in the ass obstruction once you start getting to the bottom of the bowl, and, naturally, it gets pretty damn hot. Can somebody please tell me its purpose?

Thanks,
Kiel

UFOs must be real. There's no other explanation for cats.

Thanks for the help again! So seeing how this carburetor wasn't limited to just kaywoodies, I'm assuming Dunhill also took a run at it too?

The mid-20th century was pipe smoking's peak regarding sheer numbers, and since today's creative visual designs hadn't been invented yet and everything was mass-produced "shape chart" stuff, plumbing-oriented gimmicks were seen as the only way one manufacturer could differentiate his merchandise from another's. (Some stuff got downright weird.)

Dunhill indeed played the game for a while. (Though not nearly as much or often as most)
