Re: shank cap advice

When you fellas are turning these tenons for caps and extensions and such, how are you measuring? Eyeballs and calipers? A 'turn-stop-measure-repeat' operation? Thanks Unbeknowst to most folks, your butt cheeks are really a set of very fine calipers. All it takes is a but..er bit of practice. So wh...

Re: Discussion, briar, burl, wood.

Just about any non-toxic wood burl would be fine and have interesting grain. Fruit and nut hardwoods are generally safe. R.Perkins has experimented with Manzanita, which is related to the white heath (Erica arborea) from which briar comes (root burl). Proper treatment of the burl - boiling out tanin...

So the blade actually has to touch the skin to trigger the brake?! Yipes. As far as pipemaking equipment, it'd be nice on a bandsaw.

Re: First seeds planted

When all the seeds have germinated in your tray and have a nice fully formed first set of leaves, you should take the dome off, but make sure your keep the medium moist. Those little tray cells will dry out quickly in direct sun. You can leave some standing water in the tray under the cells. If the ...

Re: Air curing in a basement?

If it takes 8-12 weeks, it's not an accelerated process. A curing chamber takes the same amount of time, but you don't have to check piles, flip leaves, and worry about rot and mold. I tried leaf sweating for color curing, and it was a pain. It is a shortcut for color curing (2-3 weeks versus 8 week...

Re: Air curing in a basement?

So, he's basically making mini-pilones? It still takes 8-12 weeks fermenting, no?

I haven't lurked in howtogrow in forever... maybe there is some "shortcut" I haven't heard of. I'll check it out.

Re: Air curing in a basement?

trad. shoot on over to the How to grow tobacco forum there is information on sweating your leaf. http://www.howtogrowtobacco.com/forum/index.php Great folks over there. Sweating the leaf is only a quick "color cure" method - turning green leaf to brown. It is not a real cure method, which...

Wow, Mike, you really pissed off Kurt. I didn't think it was possible. You can say all the ridiculous things you want, but to be so condescending, as if you know something... I cringed when I read the patronizing remark in your last post. I barely understood your little bitch squabbles with Todd (ex...

Re: 10-10

What are you guys using to apply the stain, a wash cloth? I use a pipe cleaner and only the tips of my grasping fingers get stained when opening the bottle or the pipe cleaner eventually wicks the stain up to them.

Gloves are for sissies and metrosexuals with manicures.

Re: Pipe Lingo/Terminology

I'd make a couple changes: Well, I was chatting with a new guy here who felt a bit overwhelmed by the lingo we use. So i thought a glossary might help. We can all add to is, as i am sure I haven't covered everything. Bowl : The wood that surrounds the chamber Button : The raised portion at the end o...

If yall want to see a Messer pipe, go to page 5 of the infamous "Question About Ebonite Smell" post. I do believe he posted pictures of 2 of his pipes at the time, but one picture has been removed/ edited-out, if I remember correctly. Anyway, Mike, I don't think there is any "foul&quo...

I thought you'd be willing to part with some lightly-used olive oil out of the wrestling vat for cheap or invite him over for a quick marinating before a pipe crafting session.
