Plus ring to be flatter, get rid of toolmarks and scratches, bowl/shank sharper etc. Basically just neaten it up. The straight line thing? My Nova Chuck also had a bit of play like that. My machinist friend just made a slot into each jaw, so that they sit closer to the body of the chuck. The Nova will eventually wear out its scroll ring, resulting in the jaws opening more until eventually it will have to be replaced. That doesn't mean ...

I normally use a tiny spit of a drop of CA on the stainless steel, not the face. But only if it is really needed. Most of the time the fit is tight enough to keep the bamboo in place while shaping.

One more thing to add: Normally (in my eyes) when you have a straight shank, keep the stem straight. Tapered shank, then tapered stem. That is when seen from above. Every now and then it will be different, but in most cases I find this works well. As an aside, I never ever liked to "go back&quo...
