Re: Magnum Egg
I think it would look better with a thinner stem like Sas depicted. Still some very nice aspects overall though.

If you did nothing else than get rid of the p-lip it would have been a complete success.
Did you make the metal insert?

Re: number of blocks in stock
Wayne's got that "nurse money." I have maybe 10 blocks in a drawer. I buy a small bundle at a time and make what I can from that and then order some more. I, however, am much less of a pipe maker than Wayne. Don't let his "hobbyist pipemaker" talk give you false impressions about...

Re: TheGingerPiper Pipe No. 2
Good on you for knocking a few pipes out. My advice (advice I wish I would have started with myself) is pick a pipe you like in your own collection and try to recreate it, then compare them. Learn from what's different and move on from there.

George, I've said it before, but it warrants repeating. You are seriously the best in the world at what you do. I don't think I've ever been able to say that about anyone I've ever met in real life other than you.

Re: Hand plane...
I bet you could get an aluminum and plastic one at Home Depot that would work just as well and last every bit as long for $9.99. Think of all the work you'd save! No need to remove rust, re-paint, sharpen, any of that messy stuff. Plus, it would be made from recycled beer cans by eight year olds in...

Hand plane...
Nothing nearly as cool as Kurt's...and I didn't make this, just restored it. But for a nearly 100 year old tool, I was pretty happy with the results. Still have a lot of sharpening to do, but even as it sits now with just the initial work, it is cutting pine like butter. This plane was made between ...

Find a pipe you like and try to re-create it. When you're done see what's different about yours and when you make another one, work on those things.

Re: Hibrid eggs and brandy
Pipes are nice, but the stems seem "heavy" or too clunky to me. I think if they were slimmed down it would have better proportions.

Re: Quiet (er) shop vac.
It doesn't make it quieter, but I bought one of the Duststoppers from Home Depot today. After using it, I could kick myself for not buying one years ago. After using it for about 30 minutes to clean up my granddad's 68 year old shop, hardly one bit of dust or debris went into the shopvac itself and ...
