Re: Airway off center left to right
I am trying to visualize a 1/100” deviation and why you are distressed about it. I am pleased not to leave a significant dead space (1/2-1mm-0.02-0.04”) under the draft and to be within 1 mm (0.04”) of dead center laterally. I don’t think that you need better accuracy for smoking purposes. As I am w...

Re: Bamboo Questions
It is a laborious process.
I mask the bamboo with tape and am slightly less concerned with marking the bamboo.
Once i begin to touch the tape. I go to a finer file (#4)

Walt...I want to see a cartoon movie of your thought process. Like one of those old school, black and white, fantasia'esque style cartoons. And, while I've never done drugs, I think this will be best viewed while consuming drugs. John Michael, I am not clear on your thought process. Did you read th...

Re: First Meerschaum Cutty
Welcome back. I believe that there were some comments posted. My over all impression is that it is attractive, and I wouldn’t have much problem considering paying $150 for it (as I have done with a couple of Turkish meerschaums lately). I am more lenient with carvers working in meerschaum than I am ...

Re: Bulldog/Dublin on an undersized lathe
The problem is that with my lathe, when you do that the saddle is under the stummel, and you cut from the left.
If you look at the 1st photo in the second set, you can see the shank will not clear the saddle/tool post.
A Senior reamer works well as an expanding internal mandrel.

Re: Author
I think this pipe is pretty attractive, granting the proviso that the bottom line could be better at the heel (chin) and the underside of the mortise. You can’t address these now, there is not enough material, but there is no need to beat yourself up about it- this pipe is not ugly. When free hand c...

Re: Pipe #24 - Danish Egg
This is an attractive pipe. My only quick remark is that the bottom line doesn’t have to drop/sag quite so low. Modifying the the entry of the draft at the bottom mortise to allow a pipe cleaner to pass is called ramping- lots of arguments for and against that. Another way to allow the draft to ente...

Re: 6th Pipe - Bulldog
I agree with the above about the rear of the bowl and the shank.
I would comment that I especially like the way you carried the lateral lines of the stem as seen on the 5th Photo.

That is a nicely done slot and the lines of the stem are elegant.

Re: Himchan "Leonard" Ha
Welcome Leonard, This forum is probably the most complete collection of pipe making information and expertise available and the members are helpful if a trifle blunt in their critiques. You will get a lot of “oohs” and “ahhhs” on other sites, but little of value in the way of critique. Here, it is t...
Re: Wet briar
I have been told by one of the suppliers to let one order sit for at least 6 months before cutting. I have no way of measuring how wet briar is except to heft it in my hand. Todd Bannard (Sasquatch here) deals with multiple briar suppliers and encounters wet briar frequently, but he is also in the e...

Re: Bulldog/Dublin on an undersized lathe
A couple of more photos. The first demonstrates the lack of clearance over the lathe saddle when the stummel is placed on a jam chuck. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/5834/euslcI.jpg The second shows a much simplified way of attaching the drive dowel. There is no need to true or center the do...

Re: Dublin Churchwarden
Over all, this is nice. I am not a fan of churchwardens, but I think that the Dublin stummel works very well for this. I agree that the shank/stem is too fat, but you do not have very much room at the mortise to reduce the diameter there. I get the best results for my shank stem line by cutting from...

Re: Pricing repair work
Agree with Chris, George and Sas. I do some repairs for the guys in my club, and I may make $3 an hour. If I really streamlined the operation I could maybe make $6 an hour. 😀 (I’ve also gotten some nice tobacco) For me this is a hobby and I only do this for friends and on my own pipes that occasiona...

Re: Pipe #23 - Rhodesian
I like this pipe. It fuses elements of the prince and the Rhodesian You did a lot of things right. The bowl is symmetric, the rim shape pleasing, the transition is crisp and the line of shank and stem continuous. As for the finish, Jesse is the expert here. Sometimes hard to buff areas can be done wi...

Re: Bulldog/Dublin on an undersized lathe
it probably would be easier with an unlimited budget, but I do feel that this method allows me to fuse the freehand/shape first method and lathe turning with a $750 lathe, a cheap three jaw chuck and a $200 drill press (both were on sale at HF). I am pleased with the way this one turned out. That th...

Re: Sickle WoodShop and (future) PipeShop
Welcome to the forum. It is interesting that many of us came to pipe making without being wood workers. My personal experience is that I never touched a lathe until I had to cut tenons, nor have I done any wood finishing other than slopping on some paint. As Sas says, that may be an advantage, since...
